NWU RESONATES with Audio Freelancers

In early November, member-organizers Olivia Aylmer, Jordan Mays, Alexis Gunderson, and Rider Alsop spread the word about organizing in audio while tabling at the second-annual RESONATE Podcast Festival in Richmond, Virginia. Hundreds of audio workers, from industry newcomers to seasoned producers, convened at the Institute for Contemporary Art to build community, share knowledge, and celebrate the audio craft. In a year marked by many industry layoffs and widespread job precarity in podcasting, it was energizing to talk to peers and prospective members about the possibilities of worker owned co-op models, adapting Unilateral Announcements for production companies, pushing for fair rates and transparency, creating shared tools and resources, and advancing freelancer-friendly legislation like Freelance Isn’t Free. Dozens of attendees expressed interest in learning more about our union’s work and, hopefully, organizing alongside us in coming months!
