PEN Writers Resist Rally at the NYPL
On May 10, NWU and Creatives in Action (CIA) co-hosted Suzanne Nossel, Executive Director of PEN America, who spoke about “Defending Our Democracy in the Trump Era.” This was the first time NWU has partnered with CIA and the third time we have participated with PEN America in the last six month. Previously we spoke out in support of Turkish journalists facing a brutal crackdown, including colleague Ahmet Sik, who was imprisoned for a Tweet, and we participated in the PEN “Writers Resist” rally, on the steps of the NY Public Library.
A crowd of about 80 people heard Suzanne Nossel describe the threats to free speech in the current political moment and the important work PEN America is doing to protect freedom of expression.
