JULY 2021

July 1 – VIRTUAL OPEN MIC FIRST THURSDAYS

The National Writers Union is returning to the NYPL Muhlenberg Branch — virtually, for the time being!

Come to read or listen to others’ inspired words. The Muhlenberg Library in collaboration with the National Writers Union is hosting a virtual open mic every first Thursday of the month. It is time to gather together and share our original works. Writers from all genres are welcome. This virtual stage allows you to add video or music to your reading as long as you have permission from the copyright owner. Participants cannot sell their works during the event but can show book covers during their readings. Content should be for a general audience, and readings including language or descriptions inappropriate for children must begin with a warning. Recording of this event is strictly prohibited.

This event will be conducted via Google Meet. Registration is required by 5 pm on the day of the open mic. If you would like to read, please put “writer” after your name (e.g., John Smith writer).  You must provide your email address in order to receive the link to participate and a link with a consent form that must be filled if you are a “writer”. Each writer can read up to seven minutes.  Reading order will be determined by first come, first serve.

OCTOBER 2021

October 1 – NWU New York Online Pre-DA General Meeting

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 1, 6 – 8 PM (ONLINE)

Our national Delegate Assembly is only a few weeks away — it will run from October 21-23. This is our union’s most important gathering where we set long-range goals and get energized by meeting old friends and making new connections.

Before we make national plans, we need to hear from you.

Please join us online next Friday, October 1, at 6 pm ET. Why?

Number 1: Meet our NY Delegates: Michael Baginski, Tanya Beltran, Brendan O’Connor, and Eric Thurm.

Number 2: Discuss resolutions and topics the NY Chapter would like to raise at the Delegate Assembly.

Number 3: Recruit members for the four national committees (Women’s Committee; BLM/Racial Justice; Immigration/International; and Legislative).

Number 4: Define local priorities and ways to get the word out.

This is only the beginning. Please register in advance using this link. Have questions? Email nwuny@nwu.org or call/text the NY Co-chairs — Alex at (203) 947-2497 or Ekim at (607) 768-5361.

What is the Delegate Assembly?

The legislative and policy-making body of the NWU is the biennial Delegate Assembly, consisting of the National Officers and delegates elected from the Chapters. The Delegate Assembly meets as a body once in two years, but may be called upon to make decisions between biennial meetings. This upcoming assembly could be a watershed event as everything is on the table. We are no longer bound by the constitution of an international union, and we can propose and discuss changes that better reflect our industry and our union. We will evaluate the service agreement with the Graphic Communications Conference of the IBT as well as our own bylaws. We are taking significant action on the legislative front with the PRO Act, Freelance Isn’t Free, and the 21st Century Federal Writers Project Act. The list of campaigns continues: Freelance Solidarity Project, #DisneyMustPay … and more.  Recently, the NWU was mentioned in the Columbia Journalism Review and The New York Times.

This momentum can only build with you. We will work with you however and whenever you can help us. Learn more about the Delegate Assembly and register to attend (free for NWU members).

October 3 – Brooklyn Book Festival

NWU AT THE BROOKLYN BOOK FESTIVAL (BOOTH # 512)
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 3, 10 AM – 6 PM

The Brooklyn Book Festival is back, and that means more writers can learn about all the campaigns the NWU leads to protect their rights. Being New York City’s largest free literary festival, though, we need help reaching everyone that attends.

Our booth (#512) will be near Borough Hall Plaza in Columbus Parkon Sunday, October 3, from 10 am to 6 pm. Any current dues-paying member who volunteers to promote the NWU for a two-hour shift will be able to sell his or her books at our table. To sign up just email us at nwuny@nwu.org or call/text Ekim Kilic, NY Chapter Co-chair, at (607) 768-5361.

Spread the word! Join us in Brooklyn on October 3.

December 9, 16 – VIRTUAL OPEN MIC THURSDAYS

EVERY THURSDAY at 6:30 PM – 8 PM ET

The National Writers Union has resumed its open mic series that was held monthly at the NYPL Muhlenberg branch for over a decade. As always, writers from all genres are welcome. You can join with or without video and read for up to seven minutes. No advance registration needed. This virtual stage allows for more interaction, so you can add video or music to your reading as well as share your Amazon, website, and social media links. As we’ve done at the library event, we’ll dedicate some time for announcements about upcoming book launches or other events of interest to writers.

Looking forward to welcoming you this Thursday from 6:30 pm to 8 pm. This will be our regular time slot. Come even to just listen to others’ inspired words.

The NWU enjoys bringing communities of writers together. Events like this one become conduits for sharing our individual works more widely. However, any invitation from an editor or a publisher that is extended during our gatherings does not have the NWU’s endorsement unless specifically stated otherwise. Please always protect your work by doing your own due diligence and tapping into the NWU’s resources.

We’re very eager to help our members and fellow writers’ organizations whenever we can. Do you have an upcoming virtual event for or about writers? Reach out to the National Writers Union to see if we can collaborate with you.
