NWU-BOSTON TESTIFIES TO LEGISLATURE FOR MALC

As a part of the Massachusetts Artists Leaders Coalition  (MALC) June 4th testimony in support of an amendment to the Massachusetts Independent Contractor Law, Steering Committee Member John L. Hodge presented oral and written testimony to the House and Senate Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development. This amendment to protect artists and writers is in H.1652 and S.1099.

Current state law is designed to prevent employers from using independent contractors to perform the same work that could be performed by employees, for this would deprive workers of the legal protections and benefits enjoyed by employees. But the law works against the interests of freelance artists and writers who want to maintain an independent status and enjoy the protections available to them under federal copyright law. MALC, which represents artists of all disciplines including writers, has been working to amend this law for several years and continues to support the appropriate amendments.
