David Hill, first vice president of the National Writers Union, attended the 6th annual Excellence In Journalism (EIJ) conference September 16-20 in New Orleans.
The EIJ, which is a collaboration of the Society for Professional Journalists and the Radio Television Digital News Association, brought together roughly 1000 attendees. Freelancers, newsroom managers, editors and educators from around the country attended panels, workshops and celebrations.
One yearly tradition at EIJ is an informal round table of leading journalism organizations, which gather to discuss various issues they face, share best practices, and plan for the year ahead.
Hill was invited to participate in the round table on the NWU’s behalf. The discussion ranged from organizational concerns to support for journalists working in conflict areas around the world. There were calls for solidarity, support for campaigns to protect journalists, and brainstorming sessions on how organizations can better serve writers, editors, publishers and news outlets alike.
The meeting provided our union with the opportunity to engage—and potentially partner with—other like-minded journalist groups with similar agendas. We look forward to building on these relationships and to being a part of this round table in the future.
