With the first caucuses and primaries of the 2016 Presidential Election underway, our parent union, the UAW, is discussing whom, if anyone, to endorse. To aid them in this decision, the UAW’s International Executive Board asked every UAW Region to conduct a member survey  to determine whom they preferred. The National Writers Union is Local 1981 and part of UAW Region 9A, which includes New York City and New England.

We sent the survey to every current NWU member for whom we had an email address. The survey period was January 14 – 21. We received 279 total responses; far from a majority of our membership, but more than enough to be statistically significant. The results were as follows:

Jeb Bush – 1
Ben Carson – 0
Hillary Clinton – 54
Chris Christie – 1
Ted Cruz – 2
Carly Fiorina – 0
Jon Kasich – 2
Martin O’Malley – 4
Rand Paul – 0
Marco Rubio – 1
Bernie Sanders – 205
Donald Trump – 9

In addition, seven members emailed back to question why Jill Stein, Green Party candidate for president, was left off the list. The survey was written up by the UAW with every local taking the same survey.

The NWU has not endorsed any Presidential candidate. And this survey was not about an endorsement; it was to help the UAW understand which candidates have support among membership nationwide.

It’s important that unions play an active role in politics on behalf of their members’ interests. Thank you to those of you who participated in the survey. Your input helps insure that your union represents its members, and that it grows stronger in the process.

David Hill is NWU’s 1st VP.
