JANUARY 31, 2021 3-5 p.m. BY ZOOM Every year our Boston chapter holds a Book Party to celebrate members who’ve had a book published the previous year. Some of these members read short excerpts from their work. Read about our members’ 2020 accomplishments here. We also invite a speaker to address issues of interest to writers. Past Book Party speakers include Andre Dubus III, Howard Zinn, Anita Diamant, William Martin, and Danielle Legros Georges. We’re delighted to announce that this year our keynote speaker will be Allissa Richardson. Ms. Richardson, assistant professor of journalism at USC Annenberg, will talk about a cutting edge phenomenon: how African Americans use mobile and social media to produce innovative forms of journalism – especially in times of crisis. Her talk will be followed by a Q & A session.
Ms. Richardson’s new book, Bearing Witness While Black: African Americans, Smartphones and the New Protest #Journalism (Oxford University Press, 2020) explores the lives of 15 fifteen mobile journalist-activists who have documented the Black Lives Matter movement using only their smartphones and Twitter.
